Credits & Lyrics

On Christ, the Solid Rock, I Stand (My Hope is Built on Nothing Less)
Words by Edward Mote (1834), Music by William B. Bradbury (1863)
Arranged by M. Ryan Taylor (2017)

My hope is built on nothing less
than Jesus’ blood and righteousness;
I dare not trust the sweetest frame,
but wholly lean on Jesus’ name.

On Christ, the solid rock, I stand;
all other ground is shifting sand,
all other ground is shifting sand.

When darkness veils his lovely face,
I rest on his unchanging grace;
in ev’ry high and stormy gale,
my anchor holds within the veil.

On Christ, the solid rock, I stand;
all other ground is shifting sand,
all other ground is shifting sand.

His oath, his covenant, his blood
support me in the whelming flood;
when all around my soul gives way,
he then is all my hope and stay.

On Christ, the solid rock, I stand;
all other ground is shifting sand,
all other ground is shifting sand.

When he shall come with trumpet sound,
O may I then in him be found;
dressed in his righteousness alone,
faultless to stand before the throne.

On Christ, the solid rock, I stand;
all other ground is shifting sand.
On Christ the solid rock I stand.

About the Arrangement

I found this folk-like hymn while working on writing new lyrics inspired by the parables of Jesus. I was having a hard time with the parable of the wise and foolish builders and decided that I’d see what other writers have produced on the subject. I quickly found this early 19th-century hymn and decided it was a perfect fit for the project and added it to my notes.

A couple of months later I was asked to help plan a special musical fireside for our church on the theme of Christ’s Atonement. I created the arrangement and minus track for that musical event.

The first performance was on 10-7-2017 at the Saturday Evening Session of Stake Conference for the American Fork Hillcrest Stake of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

I have released the audio track and minus track along with a lead sheet freely for non-commercial performance in hopes that it might be useful to others. If you do have an opportunity to use it and happen to record/video the performance, please drop me a line at mryantaylor@gmail.com with a link.
