Wow, GI 110? I had to check that out. The highest estimate I found, and the most common, was 103 (which was taken from test results by The Glucose Revolution author Jennie Brand-Miller). That was still shockingly high. However, there seems to be some debate and confusion over dates and their GI value.

One study on dates tested three varieties for their GI, hoping to link it to the high rates of diabetes in Arab countries. It found however that their GI's ranged between 30 and 50. That's a big difference. Glycemic Index dot com only lists these three varieties in their index. So I'm guessing that they're suspicious of earlier tests.

Glycemic Index pioneer Michel Montignac lists dates as a 70. Still High.

The problem I find with comparing dates to sugar is that sugar has nothing in it for you. Dates are not only high in fiber (one of the reasons such a high GI rating is questioned), but are loaded with vitamins and minerals. They are a nutrient dense food.

Also, there is at least one time that it is good to get a little easy energy for your body: right before an hour or longer cardio workout, and (for workouts longer than an hour), as fuel along the way. That is one time that Selene Yeager, author of Ride Your Way Lean (my guide as I'm switching from hiking to biking for the winter), says it is good to eat something that will give you the energy to keep going. Eating before you ride will also help you burn more calories along the way. I can attest to the fact that some kind of 'energy' food was absolutely necessary for some of the long hikes I did this last Summer.

Lastly, the nuts in this recipe should lower the glycemic impact.

Still, eating a pan full of these wouldn't probably be a good idea. One serving before a workout or one with a balanced meal should be enough.

Nice recipe. Certainly dates are better than sugar as a sweetener. It's a shame that dates have GI index of 110 to sugar's 100. I try to stick to foods with lower GIs. I think I'll wait to try this recipe until I have to take a dessert to a party. I have saved a copy on my PC.

I went to a seminar on depression at Education Week at BYU a few years ago, and the speaker was talking about cognitive therapy and how much it really helped people. I remember her talking about those 'bottom of the barrel' thoughts you mentioned and she compared them to 'the fiery darts of the adversary.' It was really very cool and very helpful to put those self-destructive thoughts into a scriptural perspective. Sometimes its easier to deal with when you realize those thoughts might not have originated in you.

Great insights and depth. Thanks for making yourself vulnerable by sharing these thoughts.

I struggled with this my entire life until about age 30 (not that I adore myself 24/7 today, but most of the time I think I'm okey dokey). My struggle has different sourcing than yours (or others, perhaps) - stemming from the fact that all love delivered by my family of origin was completely conditional. Being taught that you are intrinsically bad when you do something bad, and having love withdrawn every time you err in the eyes of your family members, does a real number on you. So I self medicated through various addictions (including food) starting in my early teens when the pain became too much and I had yet to find the faith required to lift myself up and recognize my worth as a daughter of God.

Being taught by the missionaries in our shared faith was the first time I felt the pure love of Christ, through the HOly Ghost. It was amazing and powerful. But that alone was not enough to stop all the addictive behavior. For almost another 2-3 years I struggled, until I read the book "Conquering your Own Goliaths" by Stephen Cramer. That coupled with help from Jim Jones got me to understand that the "yes but..." followed by all the reasons you suck playing over and over in your mind is NOT what God designed for you, me or any of His children. That God is no respecter of persons, and that no one can lay claim for the "bottom of the barrel", if you will. I was trying to stake out the bottom of the barrel for myself, but that is what the opposition wants you to think - that that is where you belong, that you and only you are lower than low, and "if only people knew the "real" you..." Bottom line? Lies, all of them.

So when I realized that God didn't want that for me or any of His children (but especially for me personally), and that is why He sent his Son to atone for my sins/errors/transgressions/wrong choices, that NOT embracing this was not compatible with the truths I had learned.

This was the beginning for me. And as you know, I still struggle with food, though through your help and others, I am making headway on loving myself more and more.

So just for today, I will love myself by eating less, and running more.

Thank you again for sharing!

[...] I may not have centuries worth of decay and grime to deal with in my journey, but I certainly have decades’ worth. My problems will not be solved in a day, a week, or most likely, even a year. Embracing that fact gives me strength and resolution. It gives me peace. It also ennobles, in my own feelings at least, what I am trying to accomplish. Not only will it not be easy, it may be the most difficult thing I have ever done in my life, but I cannot be defeated.
Hey M!

We have a lot in common right now my friend. I also am working on losing weight. I did something that will either prove to be courageous or stupid.. I started posting weekly updates on youtube. If I don't lose the weight, then there will be people who will know what I weigh.. Yikes!!!

I also need to clear out my office, & started doing that a couple days ago. I'm having the same problem you are in that there is too much clutter, & too much unorganization for me to be creative... With the right set up, I believe that I will get a lot more accomplished creatively.

I hope you are doing well!!

I worked all today and yesterday on my office. All I have left to do is go through the file cabinet (ack!). Already, the room is beckoning me, saying, "Come in, come in. This is a clean space. This is a place where you can make great things." :-)

This speaks to me in so many ways. Thanks for the mental decluttering tactics. It's reminded me how much I want to declutter my studio space for exactly the same reasons. It's so nice to know I'm not alone out there!

I've been on a plateau for the last couple of weeks, but I haven't been exercising as intense as I was during the Summer. I got an assignment to write on an excercise program for Classical Singer though, I'll be doing a crosstraining program between pilates and biking, so I'm really excited for the books to come this week and get started on it. The best thing is that CS is going to follow through with updates over a period of months. That should really keep me motivated. :-)

Hi Myndie, I'll answer to M, Ryan, Taylor or even Meredith (all part of my name). :-) Yes, I'm LDS. I just got called as Stake Music Chairman and am doing my best not to embarrass myself as the ward organist. I'm glad you found the site. Feel free to chime in anytime!
Hi M. Ryan Taylor....sorry, not sure if I could call you M. or Ryan! I found your site from an amazon book review! I'm so glad I did. I look forward to reading more of your posts. I'm a vocalist and seem to have some similar struggles with healthly eating as well...also, can I assume you are LDS too?

Anyway, I will come back later and read more of your posts. Just wanted to say HI!
